Interview to Victoria Koupparis (Lavender Field)

I met Victoria browsing for something nice to buy for myself on Etsy. I found her shop and fell in love with her crochet art, and after a few conversations I discovered the great person she is. This is why I wanted her to be the next victim and I'd love to share her beautiful work with you. Enjoy the interview!

Conocí a Victoria cuando me puse a buscar algo bonito para comprarme en Etsy. Encontré su tienda y me enamoré de su arte en crochet, y luego de algunas conversaciones descubrí a una gran persona. Es por esto que quise que fuera la próxima víctima y me encantaría compartir sus bellos trabajos con ustedes. Disfruten la entrevista!

1. What kind of art do you make and how would you describe it? (Qué tipo

de arte desarrollas y cómo lo describirías?)

I make wearable art in the form of jewelry made with crochet loops, ovals, teardrops, combined with semi precious stones, beads, findings, chains and ribbons, and even handmade clay beads that I make myself.

2. What’s your favorite material to work with? (Cuál es tu material fav

I like working with just about anything I can get a hold of! (eve

n old wood....lol)

Me gusta trabajar con casi todo lo que pueda conseguir! (incluso madera vieja).

3. What do you like most from your profession? (Qué es lo que más te gusta de tu profesión?)

Definitely not having a boss is what I like the most, but I als

o love not having a schedule to follow, as well as making and unmaking my own rules as I go and as I see fit.

Definitivamente el no tener un jefe es lo que más me gusta, pero también me encanta no tener un horario que seguir, así como hacer y deshacer mis propias reglas a medida que avanzo y ver si funcionan.

4. What’s the most challenging thing you had to face? (Qué es lo más difícil que has tenido que afrontar?)

I love a challenge. I like to continuously challenge myself in different ways. It's my w

ay of keeping on keepin' on. Once I set my mind to do something then I'll make it happen, no matter how challenging or seemingly impossible it may be. But to answer your question directly I think that promoting my own work so far has been a big challenge, considering the fact that I don't have any background on marketing, advertisement nor photography.

mi manera de continuar. Cuando me propongo algo lo hago posible, no i

mporta qué tan difícil o casi imposible sea. Pero pare responder tu pregunta directamente, el mayor reto hasta ahora ha sido promover mi trabajo, considerando el hecho de que no tengo formación en marketing, publicidad o fotografía.

5. Where do you find your inspiration? (Dónde encuentras tu inspiración?)

Colors inspire me a lot, as well as the different combinations of such. I also find inspiration in nature, as well as in things that I consider to be aestheticaly beautiful (from fashion, to people's eyes or faces, to architecture, to design, etc), but many times I also find it in things I consider to be ugly because I like to imagine ugly things turned beautiful, and in the process of doing so different ideas start to pop into my mind! I also find clusters of circles and loops fascinating lol (I think you can tell just by looking at some of my designs....).

amente bellas (desde la moda, ojos y caras de personas, arquitectura, diseño, etc). Pero muchas veces también la encuentro en cosas que considero feas porque me gusta imaginarme lo feo se convirtiéndose en bello y durante este proceso diferentes ideas saltan a mi mente. También me parecen fascinantes los grupos de círculos y aros (creo que se pueden dar cuenta con tan solo ver algunos de mis diseños...).

6. If you had the possibility to create your ideal studio, how would it be? (Si tuvieras la posibilidad de crear tu estudio ideal, cómo sería?)

Oh, I'd love a HUGE room with lots of working space, high ceilings, lots

of natural light and with just the right temperature (not too cold in the winter and not to hot in the summer), replete with supplies and fabrics, and beads, and equipment, and then some, and a super fast internet connection. I hate clutter, but I like abundance, so I think a huge room would be my answer.

Me encantaría un cuarto ENORME con mucho espacio para trabajar, techos altos, mucha luz natural y la temperatura adecuada (no muy frío en el invierno y no muy caliente en el verano), repleto de reservas, telas, cuentas, equipo y una super rápica conexión a internet. Odio la acumulación pero me gusta la abundancia, así que creo que un cuarto enorme sería la respuesta.

7. Which are your favorite artists? (Cuáles son tus artistas favoritos?)

I'm discovering so many talented artists lately that it's really hard to chose just one.

Basically I admire artists who are not afraid to be different and that show their true colors. I admire the works of Cal Lane and Erin McAllister just to name a couple. I also admire an innumerable amount of really talented and creative crafters!

Estoy descubriendo muchos artistas talentosos últimamente por lo que es difícil elegir solo uno. Basicamente admiro a artistas que no temen ser diferentes y se muestran como son. Admiro la obra de Cal Lane y Erin McAllister por nombrar un par. También admiro a una innumerable cantidad de artesanos realmente talentosos y creativos.

9. Last book you read or you are reading right now. (El último libro que leiste o estás leyendo)

I prefer to read magazine articles (I like Vanity Fair ones). I don't read that many books, not because I don't like reading, on the contrary I love reading, but I just don't make time for that.

Prefiero leer artículos de revistas (me gustan los de Vanity Fair). No leo muchos libros, no porque no me guste leer. Por el contrario, me encanta leer, pero no encuentro el tiempo para eso.

10. Which are your favorite blogs? (Cuáles son tus blogs favoritos?)

Too many.... but to name a few: Apartment Therapy, A Foothill Companion, How About Orange, Bloesem, Fonetik, The Sartorialist. Should I go on?

Believe in yourself and don't let anybody get you down. I keep repeating this in my mind: "whether you think you can or can't, either way you are right".
